Transmission & Differential Fluids

Transmission & Differential Fluids

The driveline takes the power from your engine and puts it to work, and on a heavy commercial vehicle that means transmitting serious torque under heavy loads every day. The gearbox, transfer box and differentials rely on clean oil of the right specification to keep their gears, bearings and shafts running smoothly. At Eakin Bros Ltd, we check fluid levels and condition throughout the driveline and replace fluids as required by the service schedule, helping you avoid some of the most expensive repairs a commercial vehicle can face.

Why transmission and differential fluids matter

Transmission and differential oils do several jobs at once. They lubricate gears and bearings, carry away heat, reduce friction and protect metal surfaces from wear and corrosion. Over time, that oil is put under considerable strain. It breaks down with heat and use, collects tiny metal particles from normal wear and can be contaminated by moisture. Fresh, correctly specified fluid helps to:

  • Reduce wear on gears, bearings and synchromesh components
  • Keep gear changes smooth and predictable
  • Control operating temperatures within the driveline
  • Protect against corrosion and premature failure
  • Extend the life of expensive components

Gearboxes, transfer boxes and differentials are costly to repair or replace, and the cost of a fluid service is small by comparison.

What's included in our service

We check each part of the driveline that holds its own oil, working through the vehicle methodically:

  • Checking fluid levels in the gearbox, transfer box (where fitted) and front and rear differentials
  • Assessing the condition of the oil, looking for discolouration, a burnt smell, contamination or excessive metal particles
  • Inspecting casings, seals, breathers and drain and filler plugs for leaks or damage
  • Replacing fluids as required by the service schedule, using oil that meets your vehicle's specification
  • Refitting and securing drain and filler plugs, then rechecking levels
  • Checking for leaks after the work is complete

If we find a leak, low level or contaminated oil, we'll let you know what we've found and explain what we recommend.

Signs your driveline fluids may need attention

Problems with driveline oil can develop quietly, but there are often clues. Look out for:

  • Difficulty selecting gears or a notchy, stiff gear change
  • Whining, humming or grinding noises from the gearbox or axles
  • Clunking or vibration when accelerating or changing direction
  • A burning smell from the transmission
  • Oil leaks or spots beneath the vehicle
  • Gears slipping or jumping out of engagement
  • Dashboard warning lights linked to the transmission

If you notice any of these, have the vehicle checked promptly. Running a driveline on low or degraded oil can quickly cause serious damage.

Different fluids for different components

The gearbox, transfer box and differentials don't all use the same oil, and using the wrong specification can cause problems. Manual gearboxes, automatic transmissions, transfer boxes and axles each have their own requirements, and these vary between manufacturers and models. We use fluids that meet the specification for your vehicle, so every component gets the protection it needs.

How often should driveline fluids be changed?

Change intervals depend on the vehicle's make, model and age, and how it is used. We follow the manufacturer's service schedule for your vehicle. Vehicles that regularly tow, carry heavy payloads, work in hilly areas or spend a lot of time in stop-start traffic put more strain on their driveline and may benefit from more frequent attention. We check fluid levels and condition at each service, so any problem is caught early.

Commercial vehicles we work on

We carry out transmission and differential fluid checks and replacement on a range of heavy commercial vehicles, including Isuzu, LDV (Maxus), Great Wall and Daihatsu. Whether you run one vehicle or a whole fleet, we understand how much you rely on dependable vehicles that keep working.

Why choose Eakin Bros Ltd

  • Experienced technicians who understand commercial vehicles
  • Correct fluids for each component, matched to your vehicle's specification
  • Clear communication, so you know what's been done and what's coming up
  • Work recorded in your vehicle's service history to support compliance and maintenance records
  • Minimal downtime, so your vehicle is back to work quickly

Combine it with a full service

Transmission and differential fluid work fits neatly alongside other routine maintenance, such as an engine oil and filter service or a steering and suspension check. Having these done together keeps your servicing simple and cuts the time your vehicle spends off the road.
